Richard,
I can heartily recommend a White Lightning Ultra monolight. They're tough
and reliable, the company offers a good warrantee, they're easy to use, and
you can do just a ton of stuff with only one light.

Bear in mind that you will also need a flash meter. I'd buy the most basic
one you can find that doesn't have a reputation for unreliability. All you
need is something to tell you what f-stop to set. I'm not really up on the
current models but perhaps somebody else can help here. I have a nice little
Sekonic that takes a single AA battery, which is helpful. Make sure the
meter has a PC-cord socket.

Studio lighting is much easier than on-camera flash (maybe that's just
because I have so much more experience with it, but I believe it's true).
You'll enjoy it, and your results will improve dramatically over on-camera
flash, no matter how good you are with the latter. Good luck. Have fun.
