Actually a bean bag would probably be better than a table top tripod in
most instances. You wouldn't have to worry about it tipping over, for one
thing. And you could always put your camera and lens on it so their
combined C of G was securely centered on the bean bag. Or you could just
securely duct tape body and lens to a rock or some other thing reasonably
heavy and stable. :-)

Personally, I'd much rather handhold my kit and accept the blur than 'save'
money by skimping on a tripod and risk watching that finely polished glass
do a face plant on the ground.
