Hi,

Great, thanks for the info. I think i'll pick the one up that i have my eye on :) on www.photodo.com it gets the same rating as the FA Zoom 28-70/4 AL. Not bad, but i'd still prefer the 28-70/4 AL

IT should make a good companion for my F 70-210/4-5.6.

Thanks

From what I understand, the SMC-F 28-80 is supposed to be a pretty decent performer. If you check Photodo.com, it get relatively high marks. The Takumar-F version is a lesser lens, with not quite as good a contrast or sharpness.

Yes, the Takumar version is the non-SMC.  The power zoom is the SMC-FA 28-80/3.5-4.7. It has a tiny bit smaller maximum aperture at 80mm.  A lot of people knock this lens, basically due to its build quality, but the one I owned had excellent optics, it was just too heavy for my tastes. Plus, I never really used the power zoom feature at all, and when the 28-70/4 went down in price, I got one of those instead.

I believe there is also a newer FA-28-80, available in both a silver and a black version, but I've not heard much favorable about the lens, just a few postings indicating it was a fairly standard performing lens.

Would the non SMC  be a takumar and would the power zoom one be an FA as apposed to the F?
