A range of six to 18 inches for the macro focus range isn't bad. I don't know the effective ratio but you can fill the image with a flower easily. The digital has the advantage over a film P&S that you can see a. what you are shooting and b. if you are in focus. For someone who basically is looking for P&S with close-up, I still say this is not a bad choice. Locking on Wide isn't such a bad idea as it maximizes depth of field, thereby compensating for the camera movement of the person who doesn't know to use a tripod . . .
