The term "focal length," at least according to my standard references (_The
Focal Encyclopedia of Photography_ and _The ICP Encyclopedia of
Photography_), should not be abbreviated. Its symbol is � (stylized or
italic f, in case it doesn't come through ascii) in optical formulae (cf.
Sidney Ray, _Applied Photographic Optics_).

Certainly the woeful "f/l" should NOT be used, as it is almost certain to
cause confusion.
