If you are shooting a scene illuminated by a red light source only one in 4 
pixels will register an illumination value, information is lost (except in the 
case of Foveon sensors).

Look at Kodaks own brochure for their DCS760M monochrome camera, they compare a 
section of an image shot on a mono sensor and colour sensor of the same pixel 
dimensions. Detail is much lower for the colour image, detail is sacrificed to 
capture colour information.
