There are some shots you can get with experience, and some that you need a fast motor drive to get consistently. To get balls coming off tennis racket faces, or baseballs off bats (and not just in the frame) you need more than just good timing. There are few sports today that you can get professional level photographs of using a Speed Graphic. Having all the latest hot snot gear won't guarantee you getting consistent pro level pictures, but not having it will guarantee that you won't. There are certain types of photography where equipment really does count.
