One of my first photo jobs in college was to shoot a class reunion over in Council Bluffs, IA. I got the 28/2.8 for that job and a sorority party. The sorority stuff was indoors in the winter, and with my new Vivitar 285 it was all shot at f8 & looked good. But prints were only 4x6. The results from the reunion were somewhat different. We did 8x10 enlargements & it was shot outdoors @ f8 or f11. The prints were so soft that I was ashamed of having done the job!
Really, it was that bad. Now, it's been mentioned on this group that there were two versions of the lens. One may be better than the other -- I don't know about that. If you're going to spend your hard-earned money on that lens, you'd be better off watching for a 28/2, 30/2.8 or 24/2.8. Or, as mentioned, the 28/3.5. The A28/2.8 is the same optical design. The improved coatings make it "sharper" because of improved contrast. But after listening to some discussion on the group, I got rid of that lens as well. I did have to go to f11 to get good results. One shouldn't have to do that. ( In case you can't tell, I hold no desire to own one of those lenses again! ) I hope this is useful to you, Collin
