I've got a Nikon D100. It's AF performance is *not* ahead of Pentax.

In bright light and with an AF-S lens, the Nikon sometimes seems to
autofocus slightly faster than my PZ1p. Sometimes.

However, my Nikon hunts a lot more than my PZ1p, because the NIkon
can't seem to correctly choose which direction to spin when changing
focus distance. It's extremely frustrating to want to focus five feet
further out, and have the damn nikon camera cycle all the way back to
near, then all the way back out again, instead of just focusing five
feet further out. My PZ1p goes directly to the subject and locks on
much more often than the Nikon.

One real advantage of N or C autofocus is their USM lenses which allow
full-time manual focusing. That's a good thing, because the Nikon AF
can't pick a birdie out of the brush nearly as good as the PZ1p, so it
really needs that ability to touch-up the focus manually.
