My street shooter cameras are a Yashica T4 Super and a Ricoh GR1. Focus and recompose are a must with either one of them. I find that people don't really notice them as being a threat to their privacy. They just don't know how sharp the lenses on those two P&S cameras are, so I find I am pretty much ignored. Shel used to do a lot of his street shooting with a Leica M-series camera. We of the PDML recognize them instantly for the quality they are but John Q. Public only sees a small camera and ignores the user as being only a tourist snapshooter of no real threat.
