Bogen 3218 (black Manfrotto 434). It's black, three section, and very
sturdy. Mass 1.1 kg. Length 67cm closed, 164cm open. Max load 12 kg.
Very sturdy. Useful on overly aggressive dogs and such, too. :-)

It's very similar to the Bogen 3016 (Manfrotto 479) you mention, but
2cm longer when open, 2 kg higher load rating, and about twice as much
mass (1.1 kg instead of 0.6 kg).

I usually use it with a Bogen 3262 (Manfrotto 352) medium ball head (4
kg load rating). Mainly because then I can easily use it both sitting
down and standing up, just by adjusting the head, instead of having to
adjust the lengths of the sections. Makes life easier on uneven
ground, too. Even with the ball head, the complete package is only 1.6
kg.

I'm not sure which lens you're talking about. I use the 'pod almost
exclusively with 400mm lenses (I don't have anything longer). For my
purposes, I rarely want to go slower than 1/250, due to the subject
matter. On the 'pod, a 400 at 1/250 is pretty doable. 1/125 can be
done but takes good technique. I don't think I'd bother with anything
slower, but you may have better technique than I have. But that's all
with a 400mm lens. Shorter lenses should be able to handle longer
shutter speeds better.

If it's at all possible, I think you should get your hands on them
before making a decision. I tried several before I bought mine, but it
was several years ago and I couldn't tell you which ones. :-( I found
I was willing to pay the extra weight and price for the sturdiness of
the 3218/434.
