The LX and FM2n were very different, because the LX was a top of the
line model and the FM a mid range camera. The LX was a unique design in
the Pentax line and was very expensive to make. For what it offered for
its price, considering what most Pentax users are willing to spend it
was too expensive. The FM/FE is based on camera that has been around a
very long time, doesn't cost a fortune to make and has the distinction
of being one of the last, decent quality (trusted by pros) all
mechanical cameras. The FM3a is just an update. A new LX, that would
have a reasonable cost, would need a complete redesign.

In this aspect Nikon's policies make a lot moresence. The FM-2n was
improved and replaced by a model very similar to it...
What was the model that replaced the LX? (has the same feel, etc.)
