The non linearity of the coupling lever was one of the changes in Nikon's AI-S mount. By making the ratio of lever travel to aperture change linear the lens could be controlled more accurately by the body. It really didn't matter though: the camera took an open aperture meter reading calculation and then did another reading after the aperture stopped down, but before the mirror went up. This is the reason why the FA has much longer shutter lag than a FE2.

Perhaps the DOF preview was the electronic one and worked only when the lens was set to 'A'? Since the coupling levers on K & M lenses aren't linear, the DOF preview wouldn't be accurate?
