That's interesting - I was not aware that it was "optimized for shorter focal lengths" - I have not read that previously (to your post) nor have I ever noticed that. My experiences are that the Vivitar 2X Macro-Focusing TC provides results virtually the same as the A 2X-S and the T6-2X at infinity (but maybe I'm just not as discerning as I should be). > It is still currently being produced, but I think the ones folks > rave about here are the older metal A-series ones from the 80's. Does anyone know if > the currently shipping Viv MacroConverters are as good as the old > ones? I am not familiar with any newer model than "the older metal A-series ones from the 80's", I guess. I still see them advertised, but I had always assumed that they were all the same. (But, again, maybe I'm just not discerning enough - <g>). For me, the bottom line is that the Vivitar 2X Macro-Focusing TC is a very good 2X TC (keeping in mind that all TC's are compromises), and is also (due to its helicoid focusing) a useful TC to have in the bag, as well.
