This is a similar situation to the one with the N80. TTL flash metering works fine with non-CPU lenses, since it measures actual light and doesn't know/care anything about the lens setting. I use manual mode to set shutter speed and aperture, based on experience, to pick up some ambient, and let the TTL handle the rest.
