It depends on the direction of the light, how the light is being used and film (just for starters). I would measure the intensity of the main light (on the axis of the light), and try to get a measurement for the highlight (particularly with slide film) and on in the shadow to know contrast range. Contrast range has to be constrained to the limits of the final output media. So if you're shooting transparency film for magazine reproduction you have to work to the range of the press, which is smaller than the film. Every step in the process raises the contrast. Lighting that seem flat and boring during a shoot can have quite a bit of character on the printed page.
