Well Tom, that's a mighty big hat, and I think you've got it on backwards. :-)
How many brawls or wars do you suppose have been launched with slogans
like, "Hey, those guys are just like us!" or, "that ain't the way I do it,
but I don't know everything."?
Seriously--constant contact with people who have different methods, and
different philosophies driving those methods, and, frequently, superior
work as a result of that difference, is surely a swift kick in the ass for
all but the most smuggly self-satisfied, don't you think? And for me, my
own experience of how to piss other people off is already broad enough--I
don't want it deepened.
I don't know about you, but all I have to do to not feel complacent is to
look at some of the photos shown by other list members, or read a thread
where the participants are talking about stuff that goes right over my head
or reminiscing about things that are ancient history to them but brand new
to me.
