Without even taking a lens apart, I doubt the steel bit. Aluminum, brass, plastic, yes. Steel for actuator arms, cams, maybe gears, and the like. But the body made of steel? Not likely, heavy, hard to machine, and prone to corrosion. Not a real good engineering choice.
