It was autofocus that killed Pentax SLRs in the marketplace. We were trying
to sell Super Programs against Minolta 7000s. When Pentax finally came out
with an AF SLR, it was kludgy, slow and had a reallly bad interface.
At that time, however, Pentax had changed tactics, and was concentrating on
AF compacts, which they did very well at. I think this is what kept them in
business until they found their way again with the MZ cameras.
