I'm surprised you just didn't try the 500FTZ on the MZ-S. Since the
500FTZ doesn't support P-TTL, the MZ-S will just use TTL like the
PZ-1p.

I have done that, and I use the AF360 on the Pz-1p. But once you take out the P-TTL (which really does do a much better job on exposure) then the Mz-S offers no advantages for the kind of macro work I do, and some drawbacks. It synchs slightly slower (1/180 vs 1/250), you cannot control the aperture in manual mode via the body, and you have no Hyper-Manual function. So I just use the AF500FTZ on a Pz-1p. The absence of hyper-manual, and the fact that you need it to get slow shutter flash synching with Pentax bodies (other than twiddling the knobs) also has me use the Pz-1p for birds.

It's a pity Pentax did not put some sort of hyper mode on the Mz-S - maybe it's buried in some Pentax Function that I need to change.
