John Dallman:
So, with either SMC Takumars or K-mount manual focus lenses, what could I
do, metering-wise, on a *istD?

Christian:
With Ks and Ms you get nothing. No metering at all...

Not exactly. To get metering on the *ist D with K lenses, you would have to make a simple modification on the lens mount, making a second notch 9 mm from the first one (to lock the lens at the right position). As with screw mount lenses with K adapter, you are then settled for real aperture average metering.

Remember the Spotmatic II? It appeared AFTER the Spotmatic F. Stop-down metering is very precise, arguably better than full-aperture metering.

When you don't need in-camera metering (sunny day or stable stage lighting), you lock the lens on the second (and original) notch and enjoy full-aperture focusing and picture-taking.

But I do care about auto-diaphragm and full-aperture metering: I don't
want to have to manually stop down for shooting, or for metering.

Then, as Christian said, the only solution is to get A, F or FA lenses.
