I don't think I can help you with the rest of the questions, but for this one I have an idea <grin>. Could it be that it just depends on focal length that you set the zoom lens to? You know, at 70 mm the zoom is extended, so it shadows the flash. While at 28 mm the zoom is retracted, so it does not shade.
