Hi Ryan, no Sigma 28-70/2.8 here, but I have used the flash with

  Most likely you get the shadow only at 28mm. It's always there
  regardless of the camera tilt.

  You shouldn't notice the shadow if you use the pop-up flash just to
  control the main flash, that is compensated to -1.5 or -2 EV so that
  it doesn't contribute significantly to the lighting.
  However, due to MZ-5N not knowing wireless TTL control (it simply
  trips the slave flash), you have to use the 360FGZ in manual or
  auto mode.

  If bounced, the hood won't stand in the way of the diffused flash.
  And I think the 360 is tall enough to overcome the hood anyway.

  Bounce the flash indoors whenever you can. Always use the catchlight
  card when bouncing. Don't hesitate to remove the flash and use it as
  a slave in auto or manual mode. Changing the light creates depth and
  reveals details.
