depends on who you talk to. the vendors certainly say it isn't necessary. the old NiCd batteries were highly susceptible to memory effect. the battery manufacturers merely say that the effect is greatly reduced. the chargers are a lot smarter than they used to be too. i still run my NiMH batteries until they are low before charging. my charging system automatically discharges them if they contain more than a certain percentage.
