So now I'm really confused...
A 55mm lens on an old 35mm Spotmatic gives a 'natural' view. (The view thru the viewfinder and thru the other eye look about the same.)
Now put a 50mm on the *ist-D and you get the same viewfinder view???
So does the viewfinder have generous crop lines showing where the image will get chopped?
Isn't the 50mm lens going to look like a 75mm and only get the middle of the image you see?
Help...

Good, Bill!
That is why I asked that someone check my theorising. So, I guess what you see is about the same magnification of a 135 with a .95 mag finder but a narrower view? That makes sense.

I'd bet that the limited 31mm comes pretty close to the normal image on the *ist-D (i.e. objects subtend about the same angle at the eye through the viewfinder as they do to the naked eye).
No John, really, a 50mm lens looks really close. I tried it myself, on an ist D
