I recently finished reading The Honeywell Pentax Way: The Pentax
Photographer's Companion, by Popular Photography's Herb Keppler (First
Edition, 1966; Focal Press, Inc.). Written in the screwmount glory days, it
offers a wealth of practical advice for any SLR photographer, with an
emphasis on Pentax SLRs and accessories.

As a career technical writer, I found the book's diagrams and drawings to
be among the best I've seen anywhere. Since no illustrator is credited, I
assume that the drawing concepts were sketched out by the gifted Mr.
Keppler himself. Many drawings are unsurpassed at explaining concepts that
are difficult to put into words--for example, focal length vs. perspective.
Other drawings clearly differentiate similar concepts, such as the "series
of one" illustration that shows the evolution of the autodiaphgram. I'm
thinking of sending the book to Edward R. Tufte, author of the books The
Visual Display of Quantitative Information and Envisioning Information. I
wouldn't be surprised if Tuffte included some of Keppler's drawings in his
next book.
