I was in error. The camera needs the "A" contact CLOSED to see an A lens. Then it needs the coding to determine maximum aperture available. Since the "A" pin is FLAT/Recessed on the body, M lenses don't contact it.
Make all lenses permanently A by swapping the body flat pin for a dome-topped pin that will always make contact with the lens mount. Then make divots into the lens mount to create the appropriate coding for the body to read.
