Secondly, isnt the whole point of buying a PENTAX
DSLR the ability to use a large quantity of PENTAX
lenses one already owns?  If not, why buy pentax DSLR???

I would rather go with Canon which is cheaper and
has a much better selection of AF lenses on both the new
and used market to select from....

Define "old"!

No K mount lens is more than 28 years old and the last M
series are only 21 years "old".
The istD's lack of full support of the K and M lenses is deplorable
considering the cost of the camera and ANY "K" or "M" lens is not
"OLD" IMHO. They were well made SMC optics and should last many decades.
I have lenses from the 1940's that are still in beautiful shape and
even one from 1931 that is entirely usable even though it isnt even
coated.....
