Alan, the A50 1.7's weren't all that expensive when new and they had a lot of plastic in them. They are probably just
showing their age.
That depends on what you mean. If you mean all lenses do age, then metal lenses or metal body + plastic aperture ring lenses do age much better than all plastic lenses (like A50/1.7).
