My complaints against Pentax at the time I switched to Nikon for professional use were not the lenses, but the cameras. Most of the A* lenses were superior to the AIS Nikkors that I replaced them with. The cameras were not designed for use in photojournalism, and were either not durable enough (Super Program) or were inconvenient in use (LX). Also, by 1995 they were hard to repair or replace, the the new Pentax models on the market at the time were even worse for photo-J. It's not that they were bad cameras (I still love the LX, and miss some of its features) but I don't think Pentax optimized them to slug it out with Nikon F3s on a newspaper beat. I eventually sold my A* glass because it wasn't being used and I needed the money (to finance screw-mounts and nikons) but I still kept the LX and some K and M lenses for vacation and such. Lately my girlfriend has gotten the bayonet-mount stuff and I'm using the screw-mount stuff as a sort of wistful romantic departure from the Nikon D1h and bag of $1500 superlenses that I'm lugging at work.
