Price. At the time, an f2.0 lens that wasn't a 50mm was not a basic amateur's lens. They could charge a load more for it, and with the focusing screens of the Spotmatics, the extra stop-and-a-half makes a real difference. As far as I can see, the 35/3.5, 55/1.8, 135/3.5 combination was the default set of lenses for people who wanted lenses and didn't have strong views as to just what they wanted. The 35/2.0 plus 85/1.8 set was for people who liked that combination, were willing to pay for it, and wanted the available-light ability that was otherwise confined to 50mm lenses. --- John Dallman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
