I suspect that the Rebel Digital is selling on razor-thin margins. It would be a very risky venture for Pentax to do that with their very first DSLR. Since margins are typically higher on higher-end gear, Pentax (and Canon, Contax and Nikon before them) rolled out their first DSLR in the market segment where people don't think a lot about spending so much money.
