The last time I had a heavy camera bag as carry-on was a transatlantic flight a couple of weeks after 9/11 (coming home after a 6-week trip). I had to get the flight officer to OK the bag, and that was under 20lbs. The main kit weighs 70lbs, and gets checked in. It's insured, anyway (so if it gets lost, run over by a car, or anything, I can replace it).
