I have a roller case that is almost exactly the limit for carry-on
size. Tripod and lightstands have to be checked, but I could get by
fine without them.

Mine was a freebie from Fuji (back when I shot lots of film) and is
sort of a piece of junk (I think it's a Tamrac), but the Lowepro I
borrowed for a few months from a Pentax rep would be ideal. It might
have been this one:

I don't like changing my setup for flying...the roller case goes to
weddings no matter where they happen to be, and I don't have to worry
that I forgot something while switching bags.
