 I'm not old and I'm not always cranky, and I don't really have the definitive 
answer for all K bodies :)

 The K2 definitely has a stepless shutter as it's electronically controlled.  In 
"auto" mode the shutter is fully stepless as it's controlled in analog fashion 
from the light meter.  In manual you're limited to the usual speeds.  The only 
speeds you can set without a battery are B, X (1/125) and 1/1000.
