He might - some instructors are extremely petty about camera choice.
Read your class prerequisites carefully.  If it's like the ones from
my local community college, they just call for a 'manual capable'
camera.  If you meet the specified requirements, don't worry about it.

No.  You're there to learn photography, not to pander to the whims
of your instructor.  There are better deals available than a K1000,
too - it's overpriced because everybody buys it for college courses :-)

If you want to buy a mechanical camera for use as a second body, do
it.  I'd recommend an MX, but they are getting pretty expensive now.
(Or an LX, of course.  But that's even more expensive).  Occasionally
you can find a KX, KM, or K2, often significantly cheaper than a K1000.
But buy a manual body because you want to, not to please somebody else.
