I have not used the current C41 B&W films. However, back in the 80's I used XP1 extensively. I never had real problems with it, but most of the other photographers I talked with did. Had a lab once comment that my XP1 negs were the most consistant he had ever seen from the film. All I ever did was experiment a bit when I first started using it and then did what seemed to work best for me. I seem to remember that I had to use about 2 filter grades higher contrast when printing than with conventional film. I even had some 16X prints shot at 3200 that looked real good hanging on the wall.
