About 6 months ago, when I was sort of a bit active on LUG, someone there photographed some kids playing around (and maybe in) a fountain on a hot summer's day, whilst waiting to get into a folk festival of some sort. No parents or other adult (or child, for that matter) complained, yet a security guard asked the photographer to the security office, refused him admittance to the concert, refused a refund on the already bought ticket, held him without arresting him or reading his rights for 3 hours, wouldn't allow him a phone call (so he could call his wife who was to meet him at the concert - she had a cell). Security finally called the police, who upon their arrival, told all concerned that the photographer did nothing wrong, and couldn't be charged with anything. As the event was on pseudo-private property, the most that security could do was give him a trespass notice and eject him.

A law suit is pending, AFAIK.

Scary, though, eh?

Just this past weekend, as I was walking down the street, I saw a young child, maybe just over a year old, with his/her mother. Child was (as Dave Brooks described it) walking like a "drunken sailor", and had a big puffy snowsuit on, with a huge grin on his face. Usually I'll ask first, but I wanted to capture that grin! With the snowsuit, he/she looked like the Michelin Man. <vbg>

When mom saw the camera, she put her hand over the child's face, and screamed "no pictures". I calmly told her "That's fine, no pictures if you don't want me to. Please calm down, I meant no harm. I just thought your child was very cute, but I'm happy to respect your wishes." I then walked away, as she screamed invectives at me. Sheesh...

BTW, Shel, I'm running out of superlatives for this series of photos. Looks like a real fight, then you look at the kid's face, and realize they're just fooling around. Priceless!! I'm so glad you're sharing these with us. I find them very inspiring.

thanks,
frank

Absolutely more innocent ... it's becoming more and more
difficult to photograph kids in this way. Their parents are
afraid that a stranger may be more than just a "wandering
minstrel photographer." In some neighborhoods around here
parents won't even let their kids play on the street in
front of their house, or even in the yard, without being
watched over. Fear and anxiety are rampant. I believe that
you're correct in your assessment.

I noticed the "sneakers" as I was preparing the JPEG ...
that type of sneaker is making a comeback, but, of course,
now they're in vogue and quite spendy <LOL>
