Umm, have you seen some of the newer toasters ... I bought a cheap one at Sears a few years ago, pretty much a basic model, and it's got three buttons on top, a control for light/dark toast, and the handle thing to push down that gets the toast toasting. I do not even know what two of the top buttons are for.
