I read a quote once that Pentax is the second oldest glass manufacturer in Japan. Some of the Pentax lenses have a Tamron barrel but I have been told by both the Pentax rep and the Tamron rep that the glass is made by Pentax. In fact they both admitted that Pentax does the multi-coating on some Tamron lenses. I could just be a gullible country boy, just going by what others tell me.

Does not Pentax make their own glass? Are you guys sure about this? I think Nikon at least USED to make their own glass, and it is hard to believe that somebody else makes ED glass for Nikon when nobody seems to know exactly how it is made. It's of course possible that Nikon does not make ALL its own glass. Everybody is struggling to find cheaper sources of mass-market photo equipment to the extent that there is one Nikon lens that everyone is pretty sure is actually a rebadged Tamron or some such. I seem to recall Pentax possibly doing the same thing at the really cheap end. DJE
