Hi Frank,

That's probably where I find the #2 less interesting: the dark
people going to the right contrast very well with the man's face
pointed to the left. 
I'm not sure about the expression in #1; being ambiguous is not
bad, in my opinion.

Here I agree. A bit more airy.
