scanner noise looks a lot like digital camera noise at high ISO. on positives, it will be in the shadows. on negatives, it will in the highlights. are you scanning at the maximum bit depth the scanner allows? you can eliminate it at scan time by doing multipass scanning if your scanner supports it.
