This sounds like good insurance however It's probably a little extreme for most 
amateur photographers. I also employ a large RAID array for on-line storage 
however I consider HDD on-line or off-line to be more of data integrity risk 
than optical media. I've had to attend to many a failed hard disk and a lot 
were matched drives in RAID arrays that had suffered near identical material 
failures which caused complete loss of data.
