The first time I went to Oz I took a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Sydney. The last time it was LA to Sydney. both on 747-400s. Strangely enough, the flight time was near the same. I guess diverting to San Francisco from LA is not that big a deal after flying for 13 hours... I think Air New Zealand still does the San Francisco-Sydney route.
