I have no experience with the Gitzos but I do have both the 3 and 4 section 
Manfrotto Carbon tripods. I use them in entirely different ways and stability 
has been less of a concern to me than weight and closed length. In both cases 
if I want the best stability I'll simply extend only the first leg section and 
get down lower. Four leg section might get a bit much with the Gitzo style leg 
locks too, the Manfrottos simply open and close so are very fast to operate.
