Rob, Bob, thanks a lot for your input, I agree with all your points and I
will be going with the 3 section 1227M.

I also decided to go with the acratech ultimate ball head, this should
provide a super stable setup for all but the largest lenses.

Thanks everyone for your help, the ball head thread was very useful and
informative as well.

I think so, all other things being equal. All my tripods are two section -
Bogen.
