Hi,
   at the lab I go to they used ethylalcohol to clean the really
   cruddy negs the customer thomped upon (or whatever). Sometimes it
   worked. Sometimes not. If the crud is embedded in the emulsion, you
   are 90% out of luck. There are some commercial negative cleaners
   made by Tetenal, but I believe them to be alcohol as well. Washing
   the negative in distilled water wouldn't harm it either.

   Especially with the alcohol, try it out on some crap before :)
