Thanks Graywolf and all others who have responded. It sounds like those continous setups are a PIA and too hot.

Yes, in fact she is selling clothing, and that's one thing that prompted her to try to move from her current setup, which is an inexpensive P&S digital, I don't know what brand/model, with macro for small objects.

Now she needs to take pics of larger objects (clothing, etc), and the P&S doesn't cut it. It does not look professional. She already bought another camera, I think its the HP707. From what I read in Dpreview, its got no advanced flash capabilities, i.e. external flash through cord/mount. So it sounds like she just moved up to a camera to a higher pixel count and slightly better macro ability. But its pretty much totally automatic, i.e. it has "scene" modes. I dont think it has manual abilities. I suggested an *istD ;), but its beyond her current budget.

So that pretty much leaves the setup to be either "continuous" lighting like the ebay offering, which she can get at B&H for less. Or she can get external flash(es), triggered by the tiny onboard flash through slave triggers. But I've never done something like that and wouldn't be able to help her without alot of experimentation.

Some folks have suggested plain old sunlight/windowlight, but that is so finicky and unpredictable that I tend to stay away from that type of setup because its too hard to control all your variables.

Thanks,

rg

I believe that same kit is in the B&H Photo catalog for $199.

It is basically a portrait setup. If she is selling clothing it may be just what she needs. It would not be the best setup for small products.

A friend of mine is upgrading her photo setup for ebay sales in response to higher volume and increased variety of lighting requirements. She asked me if this was a reasonable deal:

She doesn't have the space and experience (and money) for a more elaborate setup, and this seemed like a good deal for her at the buy it now price. I told her that I normally don't do this type of shoot, so I don't have any experience with manufacturers, setups, etc. Do any of you have any experience in this area that could give a quick thumbs up/down to this offering?

TIA,
