my Pentax A* 400/2.8 is about the same weight, although it has "only" a
145mm front filter thread. Mark Cassino has one too. there are things you
can easily do with it that are just so much more difficult with a 400/5.6.
when it comes to publication quality small bird photography, size (focal
length + maximum aperture) matters as much as skill.
