Another possible solution is to scan the panoramic neg twice, once on each
end of the neg and then use software to knit the two together. I received
such a program along with my Olympus digital camera and it works really well
using two different pics, seems it would do well when the two images were
really the same.

One promising scanner (at least on paper) for this class is the Canon
D2400F flatbed scanner. It has 2400dpi optical resolution and FARE
(Canon's digital ICE clone) IR channel for scratch removal, a first for
flatbed I believe; and a DMAX of 3.3. It's due to be released next month;
but I have not seen any reviews yet. It's listed for US$499.
